Early Summer on the Rhode Island Coast
June 12 - 18, 2010
Mid June is an amazing time to visit the rugged coast of Rhode Island. Typically weather ranges from cool mornings to warm and occasionally hot afternoons, and provides us with ideal conditions, and without the crowds that come here during peak summer season. Often fog rolls in during the afternoon to provide us with dramatic light and constantly evolving conditions.
During the week we explore much more than just the nearby coast of Rhode Island. Stops at both Point Judith Lighthouse and Castle Hill Lighthouse provide ample opportunity to capture these two very unique beacons. For those looking to photograph the beginnings of spring here, we stop at Blithewold Estate Gardens, where acres of gardens, ponds, and even a greenhouse provide tremendous possibilities. The coastal town of Newport is also on our itinerary, and is a short drive from the Hotel - with some of the best ice cream on the way.

Just a handful of miles from the Hotel are two landmarks that we explore both with our macro lenses and our wide angles. The historic Gilbert Stuart Grist Mill has beautifully in-bloom gardens accompanying their historic grist and snuff mill. Knotted and weathered wood make ideal backdrops for their flowers, and creatures abound in their pond and along the trails. Just a mile away is a working co-op farm where we explore images of yesteryear photographing their broken down tractors, traditional farming, and working barns.

This workshop combines location shooting and classroom learning. My assistant and myself do not shoot while out in the field, we both believe that the best way to learn is through hands-on practice, and we enjoy being there to help guide you. During the classroom sessions, we typically display techniques, and then have time where we all can practice those techniques together. Creative assignments combine field and digital techniques, and give us an opportunity learn from each other as we work together to refine our creative and aesthetic abilities.
A typical day includes our photographing sunrise and sunset, and spending time in the classroom when the light is not at its best. The locations for this workshop are very accessible, and provide excellent subjects close to where we park.
Tuition is $700, and a $100 deposit is due upon sign up to secure your spot. Room and food are not included in the price of the workshop.
Lodging will be available at the newly renovated Lighthouse Inn of Galilee,
